The game can be played with decks of 24, 36, or 52 cards (the largest variant being Durak with 52 cards). It supports 2 to 4 players. Each player is dealt 6 cards, then the next card is turned face up - its suit determines the trump for the game. The remaining deck is placed on top, face down, with the trump card visible to everyone.

Goal of the game

The goal is to be the first to get rid of all your cards. The last player left holding cards becomes the “Durak” (Fool).

Turn order & basic rules

It’s not easy to find clear and practical instructions for Durak online, so here are the specific rules and gameplay variants:

• The first move is made by the player holding the lowest trump card. In later rounds at the same table, the turn order proceeds clockwise;
• Turns always go to the left of the current attacker - clockwise order;
• You can attack with one card or several of the same rank at once (e.g., three sixes or two kings). You may also add extra cards later after your opponent beats the first ones;
• Cards of the same rank as those already in play can be thrown in - both those used for attack and defense;
• Any player can throw in cards of the same rank in turn order clockwise;
• The first defense in the opening attack of the game can require beating off 5 or 6 cards (depends on game room settings);
• To beat an attacking card, use a higher card of the same suit or any trump card;
• If the defender cannot beat at least one attacking card, they take all cards from the table, including those they managed to beat;
• The defender can choose to take the cards immediately without trying to beat them - other players may continue to throw in cards, and the defender must take them too;
• If the defender beats all cards, they are placed into a discard pile face down;
• After each round, players refill their hands back up to 6 cards clockwise starting from the attacker;
• If the deck runs out of cards, players keep playing with the cards left in their hands;
• If a player successfully defends and runs out of cards while the deck still has cards left, they draw back up to 6;
• If a player defends and runs out of cards and there are no cards left in the deck:
  • a) In a two-player game - the other player automatically loses and becomes the Durak;
  • b) In a 3–4 player game - that player leaves the round, and the rest continue until one person is left with cards (the loser).

In four-player games, you can play 2 vs 2 - partners sit opposite each other and do not attack one another.

Restrictions on throwing in cards

• You cannot attack with more cards than the defender currently has in their hand (e.g., if the defender has 3 cards and chooses to take one, only two more may be added);
• You cannot throw in more than five cards at once, meaning the maximum defense is against six cards total;
• If a player runs out of cards and the deck is empty, that player is out of the game. Their teammate (if playing 2 vs 2) defends alone until either they win or are left against the other team. The team with cards left is considered the “Duraks” (losers).
