Questions and Answers (FAQ):
How is Preference Rostov different from Sochi?
These two versions of Preference are very similar. The same greedy and responsible vist, the same way points to the mountain and vists are counted. The main difference from Sochi lies in how the passing games are played.
In Rostov, passing games are played as follows: the talon is not opened, and the first move is made by the player next after the dealer. Also, passing in Rostov does not progress, and after the first passing rounds, the bidding starts from six spades.
How are tricks counted in passing games in Preference Rostov?
For tricks taken during passing games, vists are written, not mountain points as in Sochi or Leningrad. Vists are recorded by the player who took the fewest tricks, and they are written on the opponents. Each trick in a passing round is worth five vists. The winner of the passing game writes five vists per trick on each opponent. A player who didn’t take any tricks gets one point in the pool.
How long does a game of Preference Rostov last?
Like any other version of Preference, Rostov can be played for a set time (optional) or until a certain number of points are scored in the pool.
There is a rule that allows the game to be stopped before the time or pool goal is reached if all players agree. Then, a pool calculation is made, and players determine who won and who lost.
Preference Rostov is a game for masters of passing rounds. In this variation, the role of passing is enhanced. This is reflected in the stricter penalties for failed games and generous rewards for winning a passing round, comparable to a successfully played high contract.

Main features:
Semi-responsible vist: for a failed vist, half the value of the game is written to the mountain;
Consolation (bonus for the declarer’s failed game): in case of a failed game (remise), both defenders write vists on the declarer – 10 vists for each missed trick. The consolation is written in addition to the vists for the actual tricks taken.
Example of consolation (both defenders were on the vist):

Gentlemen’s vist: if the declarer fails (when one defender was on the vist and the other passed), both defenders share all vists equally - both the consolation and the vists for actual tricks taken. The vists are divided gentlemanly regardless of who was on the vist.

Passing is recorded in vists: 5 vists for each trick. The winner of the passing round is the one who takes the fewest tricks. If two players take the same lowest number of tricks, they split the number of vists lost by the third player equally.
Passing does not progress: all passing rounds, even consecutive ones, have the same trick value in vists;
For zero tricks in a passing round: the player writes 1 point to the pool;
Talon in passing: never opened;
End of the pool: In Preference Rostov, the game continues until each player’s pool record reaches the agreed value. The player who closes the pool (reaches the target value) “helps” the one with the highest record. If opponents’ pools are equal, help is given to the partner sitting on the left. For example, after playing a seven contract, they write 4 points to the opponent’s pool and receive compensation in vists ten times that amount - i.e., 40 vists. If all pools are closed, the player deducts points from their mountain, even if it’s at zero.
